Independence Square or "Dataran Merdeka" is located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It was here, in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building that the Union Flag was lowered and the Malayan flag hoisted for the first time at midnight on August 31, 1957. Since then, Dataran Merdeka was the venue for most of the Independence Day Parade’s held at every anniversary of the country’s independence.
